If you have finally decided to go for
it, there are things you should know and do. I know it should be obvious but do
run this
upgrade advisor tool because if your machine can't run the new program then
it's pointless reading further!
It is not possible to upgrade from any version of XP.
Unless you upgrade to Vista first, see figure 1 & 2 Fig 1 For example, if you run XP professional you would need
to upgrade to Vista Business or Ultimate, then upgrade to Windows 7 Professional
or Ultimate- I can supply all versions of Vista @ 3€ per DVD, this does not
include a license but you have thirty days to upgrade to Windows 7 before this
upgrade becomes unstable.
Fig 2
If
you do a clean install with the Windows 7 DVD all old files will be saved to a
folder called Windows.old and pictures, documents can be retrieved from that
file. ALTERNATIVELY:- Turn on your computer and load XP-insert your
Windows7 DVD and the option to install will appear. Cancel by closing the window at the X (top right
corner) and then open "My Computer" select the DVD and browse contents and you
should be seeing something like this.
Select support and again something like
this should appear
Again select migwiz and finally choose migsetup.exe
